I wanted to test out some bias lighting for my monitor so just as a cheap proof of concept I picked up some battery powered stick on LED lights. I didn't want to use those sticky pads on my monitor so I just stuck them on quickly with some electrical tape. I know it's not the most elegant solution...
..but it's surprisingly effective.
I'm going to experiment with the position of them and ideally I'd like a slightly warmer white but I think this is pretty usable as it is and the effect does work.

Put simply, if you're using your monitor or TV in pitch black, having a light behind the screen will enhance your perceived contrast. For example in this image below, the grey rectangle in the middle is actually the same shade all the way across. It's an optical illusion but bias lighting works for the same reason that it does.
